Birth of Alder
When I was 34 weeks and 2 days with my second child I realized after about two hours of braxton hicks contractions that they were much stronger and more regular than they usually were. Twelve hours later my water broke and I knew my son was coming early. For the second time I wouldn’t be getting the birth center birth I was hoping for, but I went to the hospital feeling hopeful and excited to meet my baby! My birth was beautiful, the progression and stages were exactly what you expect, my midwife was respectful and kind, and my doula was my calm in the storm. Her steadfast calm changed my labor. Without her I would’ve felt untethered and fearful, but her presence made me feel comforted, supported, and safe. My son was born and placed on my stomach but swiftly pulled away to be given breathing support. Again I was deeply grateful for my doula as I grieved not being able to hold my baby, and my husband went to the NICU with our newborn. I was so glad she was able to stay with me and comfort me through those hours before I was released to follow him.
